Scientific research is an important part of the work that goes on at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland. The research arm, known as Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute, is one of the nation’s top 12 pediatric research centers in terms of National Institutes of Health grant funding.

We are proud to be the only non-university-affiliated pediatric medical center in the United States to have a research institute of this magnitude, with a yearly institute budget of more than $47 million.

Researchers are making significant progress in such areas as diagnosing and treating pediatric cancers, sickle cell disease, AIDS and HIV, hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, developing prenatal techniques for diagnosing mental retardation and birth defects, and improving infant nutrition. Research institute efforts have led to Children’s Hospital Oakland operating the only nonprofit sibling donor umbilical cord blood bank in the United States.

Volunteer lab assistants are needed regularly and students may gain valuable experience in one of the insitute labs.

Institutional Review Board
An Institutional Review Board makes sure the rights and welfare of children participating in Children’s Hospital research studies are protected. Parents must be told all they need to know to make an informed decision about whether they’d like their children to take part in Children’s research projects.

Seven research centers
Institute researchers are organized into seven main collaborative groups, including:

  1. The Center for Cancer Research
  2. The Center for Critical Care Medicine
  3. The Center for Genetics
  4. The Center for Immunobiology & Vaccine Development
  5. The Center for Nutrition & Metabolism
  6. The Center for Prevention of Obesity, Cardiovascular Disease & Diabetes
  7. The Center for Sickle Cell Disease & Thalassemia

Pediatric Clinical Research Center
Children’s Pediatric Clinical Research Center acts as the medical center's hub for clinical and translational research, assisting researchers with their administrative, nursing, statistical, and laboratory needs. The center is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
