MEET DR. SINGSEN

Bernhard H. Singsen, MD, MPH

Dr. Singsen graduated from the New York University School of Medicine in 1968.  He completed pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA) in 1970, and was then a Lt. Cmdr. in the Navy, doing general pediatrics, until 1972. A Pediatric Rheumatology fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (1972-74) was followed by five years on the staff of CHLA. He also served as an assistant professor at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. 

Dr. Singsen has published more than 40 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 30 book chapters, and 90 research abstracts, as well as many patient-education materials related to pediatric rheumatology.  He has participated in clinical trials related to the treatment of pediatric rheumatic diseases.  Dr. Singsen also has a Master’s degree (MPH) in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health (1990), and worked as a public health officer from 2003-2005.  He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American College of Rheumatology, and been elected to the American Society for Pediatric Research. 

Dr. Singsen created academic Pediatric Rheumatology programs at the University of Missouri (1979-87), the DuPont Childrens Hospital (1987-93), and the Cleveland Clinic (1993-2002).  He has trained pediatric rheumatology fellows, been on the Editorial Boards of three major scientific journals, and been a scientific peer reviewer for 11 other research journals. 

Other activities include membership on numerous national American College of Rheumatology and Arthritis Foundation (AF) committees, chair of the Medical and Scientific committee, and member of the Board of Trustees of three State AF Chapters. He has also received an AF National Volunteer Service Citation and served on the National Arthritis Advisory Board, reporting to Congress.
