Children’s Hospital Spirit

We believe that access to the best healthcare possible is the birthright of every child. Staff at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland take great pride in their hospital and research institute, and especially in the care they provide children who come here. Founded in 1912 by East Bay women’s groups, the hospital maintains its original policy that no child is ever turned away because of inability to pay.

Because we're an independent, free-standing nonprofit pediatric medical center, we're able to focus all our attention and all our staff on taking care of children.

Children’s Hospital Oakland is the oldest (founded in 1912) and busiest (more than 214,300 outpatient visits in 2005) pediatric medical center between Los Angeles and Seattle.

• State-designated referral center for high-risk newborns in Alameda and Contra Costa counties
2,575  employees, 272 basic and clinical staff, 31 specialties, 9,571 inpatient admissions yearly

Research at Children's Hospital

The research arm of Children's Hospital, known as Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute, is one of the top 12 U.S. pediatric research centers in terms of grant funding from the National Institutes of Health. The institute’s entire 2005 operating budget of $48 million comes from grant money obtained by institute scientists and clinicians.

Tips to orient you to Children’s Hospital and the Department of Medicine

What we call the hospital
Officially, the name is abbreviated CHRCO, but many people still use CHO. However, in external publications we don’t use acronyms. In the first reference we write out the full name with an ampersand: Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland. After that it’s referred to as Children’s Hospital or Children’s.

Parking
You may park in the multilevel parking structure next to the Outpatient Building. Use the door west of the public entrance. There is an ID Badge reader on the side of the driveway opposite the garage door. Community-based medical staff may also park on the north side of the hospital along 52nd Street.

Vehicle parking decal
Please get a Vehicle Registration form at the Security office to get a vehicle parking decal. Please place your parking decal inside your car behind the rear view mirror. All other employees get a small sticker that is placed on the bumper.

Doctors Lounge
The Doctors Lounge is located down the hall from the cafeteria, between the Medical Staff Office and the exit to the south parking lot. Use your ID Badge to enter. Inside there’s an instant coffee machine, microwave, TV (with cable!) and two computer terminals for your use.

Medical Records
Medical Records is on the first floor. They have candy rewards for timely completion of medical charts. Make it a habit to visit routinely, at least every two weeks. See the Medical Records booklet enclosed in the hard copy packet. If you will be dictating, call medical records for a dictation ID number.

Hospital email
The Hospital Information Systems department (HIS) is in the basement of the Outpatient Center (OPC) at 744 52nd Street, across the street from the hospital. Their phone extension is 3636, or (510) 428-3636 if you’re dialing from outside the hospital. The Help Desk can be reached at ext. 4357 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Get your password and email address
You can get a password for Meditech and a Groupwise email from HIS. Groupwise is the newer hospital-wide email system. You can access Groupwise through the Internet using your Web browser.

Generally, hospital and medical staff Groupwise email addresses go like this: FirstInitialLastname@mail.cho.org. For example, our CEO, Frank Tiedemann’s email is ftiedemann@mail.cho.org.

Unfortunately, not everyone uses Groupwise; some of the more long-term staff members still prefer the in-house system, Magic Office. Others only have access to Magic Office for email. So if your email doesn’t get a response, use the telephone.

HIS can also help you with software and technical assistance to set up a Very Private Network (VPN) on your office and/or home computer to link to Meditech. This can save you a lot of time on the telephone finding your patients, and their lab and x-ray reports.

Phones/Paging
Hospital based physicians and residents have four-digit pager numbers.
• To page from outside the hospital, dial 539-the-four-digits.
• To page when you’re inside the hospital dial 77-the-four-digits.
When prompted enter your number/extension.

Hospital extensions that start with 3 can be dialed directly: 428-3_ _ _.

To reach an extension that starts with a 2, 4 or 5, dial (510) 428-3885. When prompted, enter the extension.

Diagnostic Imaging
Be aware the hospital is in the process of expanding its digital Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) to allow remote viewing of all diagnostic images (x-rays, CAT scans, MRIs, etc.) at dedicated computer workstations inside the hospital, and eventually, from outside the hospital via a Web-based system. For questions about PACS contact Corey Chow, PACS administrator, at ext. 4912, page him at (510) 539-7227, or send an email to cochow@mail.cho.org.

Children’s intranet — CHOnet
Check out CHOnet, the Children’s Hospital intranet. Many hospital computers have it as an icon on their main screen. If you are outside the hospital use your Web browser to go to:
1) www.childrenshospitaloakland.org, and click on “Doctor's Entrance.”
2) In the right hand section called "Learn More", click on “Links for Physicians.”
3) Click on the link to enter the intranet from outside the hospital.
4) Login using chomd for both username and password fields. At the top of the next page you can click on Directory to get daily updated phone, pager, and fax directories. In other sections you can review manuals, check meeting times, get the specialty on-call list and download PDF versions of FYI, Children’s Hospital’s monthly newsletter for physicians.
