He is an expert on genetic blood disorders. As a doctor he diagnoses and treats children with cancer and tumors. Andrés was airlifted to
Children's Hospital Oakland and a waiting team of orthopedic specialists after accidentally driving his scooter into an oncoming car. When Dr. Policy could not detect a pulse in Andrés' right leg he knew that any delay in treatment could cost the boy his leg. >>

 

 

More amazing doctors, patients and researchers
	Amazing is Caroline Hastings, MD, writing new treatment protocols that save lives and improve outcomes for kids with leukemia. Amazing is Dr. Hastings, mother of three, with the emotional wisdom to be a family's trusted friend as well as their physician.
	Amazing are pediatric cardiologists at Children's Hospital Oakland who surgically repaired Asha's heart so she could pursue her athletic dreams. Amazing is Asha, with a heart stent in place, running and jumping in four events at the 2008 AAU Junior Olympic Games.
	Amazing is Scott Hoffinger, MD, holding office hours in his living room so local high school athletes can be seen after practice. Amazing is Dr. Hoffinger surgically repairing a young pitcher’s elbow and watching him grow up to throw strikes in the major leagues. Amazing is Dr. Hoffinger establishing Children’s Sports Medicine Center for Young Athletes, because growing bones are different.
	Amazing is Mark Walters, MD, curing Justine of thalassemia, a severe congenital blood disorder. Amazing is Dr. Walters curing Isaac of sickle cell disease using transplanted cord blood. Amazing is Dr. Walters saving both children a lifetime of chronic illness and painful treatments.
	Amazing is Kishor Avasarala, MD diagnosing a rare condition that caused "mini heart attacks" in a 4-year-old girl, leaving mom afraid to let her out of sight. Amazing is Dr. Avasarala implaning a defibrillator that stopped the attacks, giving mom and daughter their freedom back.
	Amazing is Julie Saba, MD, PhD, who as oncologist, helped kids beat cancer, one child at a time. Amazing is Dr. Saba today, leading research to crack cancer's genetic code and cure all children.
