“Sports Medicine for Elite Athletes”

Scott Hoffinger, MD, of Orthopaedics was featured on KQED’s Forum radio program. The topic of the show explored kids, sports & nutrition.  Dr. Hoffinger said that too much competition in sports is unhealthy and can lead to repetitive injuries.  He recommends that children cross train to avoid muscle imbalances and not focus on one sport.

Twelve-year-old Matt Kern, who receives physical rehabilitation at our Sports Medicine Center for Young Athletes, was photographed for this youth & competitive sports cover story.  Matt, an Oakland little league pitcher, receives physical therapy twice a week and is rehabilitating an inflamed right elbow.

Elliott Vichinsky, MD, of Hematology/Oncology was quoted in this article about 11-year-old leukemia patient, Joshua Maligro.  Joshua's hometown community of Brentwood has been donating blood and holding fundraisers to support him in a "Pay It Forward" movement that was inspired by Oprah Winfrey.  Dr. Vichinsky said Joshua has rebounded from some very serious health complications.

“Small Steps Nurses take on Childhood Obesity”

Lourdes Juarez, PNP, of Healthy Eating, Active Living clinic (HEAL) was featured in the magazine cover story on how nurses and schools are attempting to tackle the childhood obesity epidemic.  Our HEAL Clinic, now in the Gastroenterology Division, has seen more than 400 patients since it opened in July 2004.

Bertram Lubin, MD, of CHORI is featured in this article about the need for two pilot sites in India for cord-blood banking.  CHORI launched a campaign to raise $200,000 in private funding to set up the two India sites.  The goal is to bank cord blood from 10 families at each site who have a child with thalassemia and a sibling with a match.

David Martin, MD and Scientist of CHORI is quoted in this magazine article about the research of Dr. Martin and Kenneth Beckman, PhD, which suggests that a mother's diet during pregnancy could have a direct link to obesity, diabetes & cancer, on her offspring for generations.  Their findings appeared in the November '06 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Ed Lammer, MD, of CHORI was interview about his new study, which discovered a genetic link between women and heart disease.  The study followed hundreds of children in Muscatine, Iowa and found that women with a certain gene variant were more likely to develop heart disease later in life.
